Lists V2 https://mynorthwest.com/category/lists-v2/ Seattle news, sports, weather, traffic, talk and community. Sat, 21 Jan 2023 02:16:02 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.5.3 TSA found more guns at Sea-Tac in 2022 than any other year https://mynorthwest.com/3786647/tsa-guns-carryon-luggage/ Sat, 21 Jan 2023 00:18:20 +0000 https://mynorthwest.com/?p=3786647 Last year, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport hit a record it did not want to hit; TSA agents found 113 firearms in people’s carry-on luggage at security.

This was more than any other year on record, and it put SEA No. 14 in the nation in 2022 for number of guns found at security.

Nationally, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, and George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston took the top three spots for guns found at security, with 448, 385, and 298 firearms found, respectively.

Sea-Tac explains what led to 2.5-hour security lines

In order, the rest of the top 10 went to Nashville International Airport, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, Orlando International Airport, Denver International Airport, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, and Tampa International Airport.

Statewide, more guns were found at Washington airports in 2022 than any year before, with 164 total. Spokane International Airport also had a record firearm year, with 34 guns found, as did Tri-Cities Airport in Pasco, with 11 guns.

While you are permitted to travel with a firearm in checked luggage, provided you follow certain rules, it is forbidden to bring a gun in your hand luggage onboard an aircraft. If you try to travel with a firearm in carry-on luggage, TSA agents will immediately spot it in the X-ray machine, pull you aside, and have airport police speak with you.

Attempting to take a firearm through security, even if done accidentally, carries stiff penalties — you can be fined up to nearly $15,000. Fines go up with each subsequent violation.

Additionally, any security privileges you might have, such as membership in TSA PreCheck or NEXUS, will be revoked. You may even be banned from certain airports if you try to get a gun through security more than once.

Don’t think you can talk your way out of those penalties, either, said TSA spokesperson Lorie Dankers. She said that TSA has heard every excuse in the book, and saying, “I forgot the gun was in my bag” is not going to fly.

“People do try that line all the time. I don’t consider that an acceptable excuse because, of course, a responsible gun owner knows where their firearm is at all times,” Dankers said. “If they’ve forgotten that they have a firearm with them, then they’re not being a responsible firearm owner.”

While there are rare instances where extenuating circumstances might let a person off the hook, Dankers said the vast majority of cases will have monetary consequences. You can even be criminally prosecuted if police deem it warranted.

“Don’t count on you not getting that civil penalty — count on you getting that civil penalty,” Dankers said. “And I can tell you, I don’t know a lot of people who have that kind of money lying around ready to pay the government for something that was completely avoidable. So heads up, a civil penalty is coming your way.”

This is a very serious violation, Dankers said, because a loaded gun in a bag could accidentally discharge and harm someone at the airport.

More from Nicole Jennings: State group recommends axing, replacing B&O tax on businesses

“That is a concern for us, it’s a concern for our employees. Fortunately, there have not been incidents of that,” Dankers said. “But we know because the vast majority of these firearms are loaded, there is always that possibility.”

If you want to travel with your gun, you can do so, but you must put it in your checked luggage and sign a declaration form at check-in. The firearm must be secured in a hard-sided, locked container, and it must be unloaded.

Dankers says TSA agents find other dangerous and prohibited items every day, such as flashlight stun guns. Before you fly, review on the TSA’s website what items are allowed.

Tom Tangney’s Oscar predictions & who he thinks should win https://mynorthwest.com/66032/tom-tangneys-oscar-predictionswho-he-thinks-should-win/ https://mynorthwest.com/66032/tom-tangneys-oscar-predictionswho-he-thinks-should-win/#respond Thu, 19 Feb 2015 04:15:29 +0000 http://mynw.migrate.bonnint.com/?p=66032 Recently, the Academy Awards have become more like coronations than competitions. So many award shows have already taken place by the time the Oscars come around, that the winners are mostly foregone conclusions. But not this year! There are legitimate toss-ups in three of the biggest categories – Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Director.

For the longest time, there was NO frontrunner for Best Picture. Movies as varied as “The Imitation Game,” “Boyhood,” “Unbroken,” “Birdman,” “Selma,” and even “Interstellar” were all trumpeted as Oscar-worthy. Then about a month ago, after a string of high-profile awards, “Boyhood” emerged as the clear frontrunner – even trumpeted as such on the cover of Entertainment Weekly. But then “Birdman” swooped in to win top honors from both the Producers Guild and the Screen Actors Guild. It’s now too close to call between “Boyhood” and “Birdman.”

Same goes for Best Actor. Micheal Keaton’s turn as a one-time movie star who’s trying to stage a big comeback in “Birdman” had been leading the pack for weeks. But then Eddie Redmayne – who plays Stephen Hawking in “The Theory of Everything” – surprised him with a win at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, which is the industry’s most reliable Best Actor predictor. Again, another toss-up.

Finally, Best Director. This award usually goes hand in hand with the Best Picture winner but recently, the last two years in fact, it has not. (Ang Lee won for “Life of Pi” when “Argo” won Best Pic, and Alfonso Cuaron won for “Gravity” when “Twelve Years a Slave” took Best Picture honors.) That could happen again this year, since the frontrunners, Richard Linklater and Alejandro Inaurritu, directed the two Best Picture favorites, “Boyhood” and “Birdman,” respectively. Linklater has won more of the awards, but Inaurritu won the big one, the Director’s Guild.

But if Kam wasn’t playing football for the Seahawks, we think he could be using his skills to do a few other things …

Some of the locations have changed a lot since the original show, like the Double R Diner (now Twedes Cafe.) But other settings have, in many ways, stayed the same. These are the five places we think “Twin Peaks” creator David Lynch are most likely to revisit.

See it or skip it: 6 movies opening on Christmas Day https://mynorthwest.com/66051/see-it-or-skip-it-6-movies-opening-on-christmas-day/ https://mynorthwest.com/66051/see-it-or-skip-it-6-movies-opening-on-christmas-day/#respond Tue, 23 Dec 2014 23:43:44 +0000 http://mynw.migrate.bonnint.com/?p=66051 A rush of big movies open Christmas Day. All of them are worth seeing, but some more than others. Here’s a quick rundown, alphabetically:

“American Sniper”

Clint Eastwood directs Bradley Cooper in a film based on the life of the best military marksman in U.S. history, Chris Kyle. Dramatically flat, this movie falls into some pretty familiar ruts. A man has to choose between his love of country and his love of family, and he keeps going back and forth.

Watch the trailer

“Big Eyes”

Tim Burton directs Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz in a film based on the husband and wife team behind those phenomenally successful and cheesy paintings of kids with great big eyes. Reminiscent of his “Ed Wood,” Burton’s newest movie explores fraudulence not only in personal relations but in art as well. One of Burton’s all-time best.

Watch the trailer

“The Gambler”

Mark Wahlberg stars in this remake of a 70’s minor cult film that originally starred James Caan. It’s competent enough but adds nothing to the original.

Watch the trailer

“The Imitation Game”

Benedict Cumberbatch stars as Alan Turing, the man who, for all intents and purposes, invented the computer while successfully cracking Hitler’s Enigma Code during World War Two. One of the Oscar frontrunners this year, “The Imitation Game” puts a very unconventional character into a surprisingly conventional movie. But Turing’s story is well worth telling.

Watch the trailer

“Into The Woods”

Stephen Sondheim’s brilliant musical mash-up of fairytales gets the Hollywood treatment and survives mostly intact. The movie is dramatically clunky at times but the cast, for the most part, does Sondheim proud, especially Emily Blunt, Meryl Streep, and Anna Kendrick.

Watch the trailer

“Unbroken”

Angelina Jolie directs the incredible life story of a one-time Olympic athlete who as a bombardier in World War Two survived being shot down, being lost at sea for weeks, and being brutalized in a Japanese POW camp. Like “The Imitation Game,” “Unbroken” is a little too conventional to be truly insightful, but what a tale to tell!

But that’s just because Hollywood is gearing up for a month-long onslaught of high-profile movies, starting next weekend. Of the 25-to-30 big movies opening up between December 12 and January 9,Tom Tangney has come up with his Top 10 most anticipated films. While new movies like “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,” Ridley Scott’s biblical epic “Exodus: Gods and Kings,” and another remake of the musical “Annie” will have legions of fans, Tom is more interested in the following films.

10. “Big Eyes”

In theaters December 25

Count on Tim Burton to make a movie about the husband and wife team behind those phenomenally successful (and cheesy) paintings of kids with great big eyes, sold in hardware stores and gas stations across America in the 1950’s. Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz star as the couple whose secrets get exposed during some rather messy divorce proceedings. Ed Wood Redux?

Watch the trailer

9. “American Sniper”

In theaters December 25

Clint Eastwood directs this true story about the best marksman the American military has ever known. Bradley Cooper plays Navy S.E.A.L. Chris Kyle who is credited with more than 150 “kills” in the battlefield. If this movie is as good as the trailer, it could be another Oscar winner for Eastwood.

Watch the trailer

8. “Mr. Turner”

In theaters December 19

The last time I interviewed director Mike Leigh, he was lamenting the fact that his dream project, a bio-pic of the British painter J.M.W.Turner, might never come to fruition because he couldn’t raise the necessary funds. So I’m thrilled to see he’s pulled it off, at long last. Actor Timothy Spall, who spent two years learning how to paint before rehearsals even began, has already won some major acting awards (Cannes, New York Film Critics Circle.)

Watch the trailer

7. “Wild”

In select theaters

Reese Witherspoon is expected to be an Oscar contender for her portrayal of Cheryl Strayed, a woman who overcame personal crises by hiking solo the Pacific Crest Trail. Based on the best-selling memoir of the same name, “Wild” is directed by Jean Marc Vallee whose most recent film, “Dallas Buyers Club” won Oscars for Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto. FYI, Rachel Belle loves the book.

Watch the trailer

6. “Foxcatcher”

In select theaters

Steve Carell as you’ve never seen him before, playing the socially off-kilter heir of the DuPont family. In the 1980’s, John DuPont bankrolled the U.S. Wrestling team with tragic consequences. Bennett Miller (Capote) directs this true story about one of the saddest chapters in American Olympic history. Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo also star as two champion wrestlers.

Watch the trailer

5. “The Imitation Game”

In theaters December 25

One of the Oscar frontrunners for both Best Picture and Best Actor, “The Imitation Game” tells the true story of mathematical genius Alan Turing. During World War II, he cracked the Nazi’s Enigma code and in the process invented the first computer, (which were once called Turing machines.) Benedict Cumberbatch, one of the hottest stars of the moment, plays the tortured loner who was also prosecuted for his sexuality.

Watch the trailer

4. “Selma”

In theaters January 9

A movie about the 1965 voting rights marches in the South. It should make for a fascinating companion piece to the Seattle Rep’s current productions of “All the Way” and “The Great Society.” Both the movie and the plays cover much the same ground, with the film concentrating on civil rights leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and the plays on President Lyndon Johnson.

Watch the trailer

3. “Unbroken”

In theaters December 25

Angelina Jolie directs this remarkable true-life story about a one-time Olympic track star who gets shot down over the Pacific during World War Two. This film has been seen by so few insiders, that an air of tantalizing mystery envelops it. Sight unseen, it’s already an Oscar frontrunner. We’ll see if that changes once it is seen. But count me curious as hell.

Watch the trailer

2. “Into the Woods”

In theaters December 25

Stephen Sondheim is a musical theatre genius, and “Into the Woods” is probably his most popular work, since it’s become a staple of high school and college productions throughout the land. Sondheim is musically and dramatically tricky though, so I hope the cast, which includes Meryl Streep, Johnny Depp and Anna Kendrick, is up to the task. I have high hopes for Rob Marshall, who directed the last movie musical to win the Best Picture Oscar, “Chicago.”

Watch the trailer

1. “Inherent Vice”

In theaters January 9

I can’t wait to see what happens when my favorite American director, Paul Thomas Anderson (“There Will Be Blood,” “Punch-Drunk Love”) takes on the challenge of adapting – for the first-time ever – my favorite American writer, Thomas Pynchon (Gravity’s Rainbow) to the big screen. Even if it’s a mess, it should at least be a brilliant mess. Joaquin Phoenix stars as a private eye investigating the disappearance of the boyfriend of his ex-girlfriend in this comedy/drama set in 1960’s psychedelic LA.
